WINE CLUB! July 2017 Selections

“The first rule of WINE CLUB is… ALWAYS talk about WINE CLUB!”
The Wine buyers (Andrew and Dale) pick two wines each month for you that we love, and you will too. One white (or rose, or bubbly) and one red. The total value of wines will exceed $40, and the longer you sign up for, the better the deal! (see below for pricing and perks) Our goal is to show excellent wines in a wide range of styles.   We only choose wines we have tasted and don’t base our choices on ratings.(Although we’ll often include them in the write-up)

Honig Sauvignon Blanc 2016
Napa Valley, California
Bright, clean, and elegant, this is a beautiful Sauvignon Blanc. It’s all about balance and subtlety, notice how it sits on the palette. We’ve tasted quite a few really nice California Sauvignon Blancs lately, and this one really stood out. It’s got 4% Semillon and 1% Muscat to give a little roundness. Most of the wine is aged in stainless steel with 10% in neutral oak, which “softens” the wine by allowing small amounts of oxygenation.

Honig is in Napa Valley and has been family owned and operated since 1964, the vinyards are sustainably farmed and solar power provides most of the electricity used by the winery.

This will go great with any lightly seasoned white fish, a light salad or asparagus. Maybe add a little chevre and fresh dill, yum!

Here’s the winery’s Description:
Bright acidity lends a crisp freshness to the flavors of peach, passionfruit, and lemongrass, artfully balanced by a touch of freshly squeezed grapefruit and lime. Juicy and refreshing, with aromas of jasmine, peach, and grapefruit rind. Medium-bodied, with a lingering finish.

Torbreck Cuvee Juveniles 2012
Barossa Valley Australia
This was one of Dad’s favorites! Cuvee Juveniles is a Rhone style blend from Australia consisting of 60% Grenache, 20% Shiraz, and 20% Mataro. Our distributor still has the excellent 2012 vintage. We were suprised at how youthful the wine shows when we tasted it again! In my experience Rhone blends age very well, it’s fun to see how this is progressing! The Spectator gave the 2012, 91 points and said “Drink now through 2019” I’d give at least a few more years. This wine was originally made in 1999 for “Juveniles” a cult wine bar in Paris.

Rhone style blends are remarkably adaptable food wines. Almost anything you would pair with a red wine will work. Rosemary, Sage, Thyme, Lavender, think Herbes De Provence will go great with this. It can also stand up to quite a bit of spice! Beef & Bean Chile Verde, Indian Spiced Shrimp, Middle Eastern Lamb Stew, Red Curry with Vegetables.

Here’s the producers description:
Bold and seductive, this youthful, unoaked blend encapsulates all that is great in natural, pure, unseasoned wine. Its fragrance, intensity and energy are all reminiscent of freshly fermenting must, with ripe juicy flavours of blackberry, spiced cherries, minerals and Asian spices wrapped around a skeleton of fresh acidity and fine mineral laden tannins. Soft and sensuous, this wine is frightfully drinkable already, but as with its predecessors will greatly recompense those who choose to give it a few years in the cellar.

Critical Acclaim
WS91
Wine Spectator – “Smooth, rich and expressive, with chocolate undertones to the cherry and guava flavors, lingering easily against polished tannins. Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. Drink now through 2019”

WINE CLUB selections June 2017!

Murrieta’s Well The Whip White Blend 2014
Livermore Valley California

30% Sauvignon Blanc 30% Semillon 30% Chardonnay 7% Viognier 3% Muscat Canelli
A fun, unique and, beautifully complex white blend that starts with the white bourdeaux Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes, but with a good chunk of chardonnay, finished with a little viognier and muscat cannelli. The small percentages of the latter two grapes really stand out, adding floral aromatics, touches of melon, and a round, full mouthfeel. The Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc both get about two weeks of fermentation in small oak barrels. Wente is the producer, the oldest continuously-operated family-owned winery in America, now in their Fifth Generation, known as California’s First Family of Chardonnay. All of their wines are estate grown and certified sustainable. The Murrieta’s well wines are made in conjunction with winemaker Robbie Meyer, who has worked with Peter Michael Winery, Lewis Cellars, and Jericho Canyon Vineyards.

This, like a Rhone-style blend is going to go great with almost anything you’d use a white wine for. I’d reccomend Asian or Indian food especially, as the complexity of this wine will really shine when paired with complex spices!

Here’s what the winery has to say:
“The Whip 2014 is an elegant and balanced wine, fruit driven with a hint of toasty oak. While this is a Chardonnay and Semillon led style, each grape varietal has a purpose in our blend that I hand select to add elements like structure, texture, floral notes, and acidity. This unique wine showcases juicy fruit flavors of white peach, pear and melon with bright acidity and a touch of sweetness that creates a smooth and creamy finish.”

The Tasting Panel gives it 91pts:
“Six varieties combine to make this aromatic and complex wine; smooth and luscious with juicy, ripe flavors; smooth, floral and lovely; smooth, floral and lovely. ”

Bedrock Wine Company Old Vines Zinfandel 2014
Sonoma Valley, California
We love Zin at Wine World, Argentina has Malbec, Australia has Shiraz, and in the U.S. we have Zinfandel. Planted widely in California, with some old vineyards containing vines up to 150 years old. The origins of the grape were uncertain, but Zin has been genetically linked to Primitivo in Italy and Crljenak Kastelanski in Croatia, neither of which is grown in great volume today. Bedrock is owned by Morgan Twain-Peterson, son of Joel Peterson, founder of Ravenswood Winery. (remember when it was the “Rs” of Zin: Ravenswood, Ridge, Rosenblum and Renwood?) Now Morgan’s friend Chris Cottrell has joined him as a partner at the winery. I met Morgan a few weeks ago and tasted several of their wines including some of the single vineyards. All tremendous wines! We also had fun talking about how great thos old Ravenswood Single vineyard wines were, and how well they age.

Zinfandel has been our go-to Pizza wine since I was a child, the spiciness goes great with italian sausage or pepperoni, the bold fruit stands up to and melds with the tomato sauce, and the complexity of a good Zin matches to complex flavors of a good pie! We always have real grated parmesan (get it at Wine World!) and chopped green onions for topping.

Here’s what Bedrock has to say:
“Morgan and Chris like to think of this as the gateway drug to Bedrock. Beyond this, it is perhaps the most important wine they make. It is widely available, and as such, acts a bit like the winery’s business card—theywant it to carry the density, fruit, freshness, and spice that we look for in our single-vineyard wines.”

Vinous / Antonio Galloni give this wine 91pts:
“The 2014 Old Vine Zinfandel is deep, rich and luscious, with plenty of up-front fruit and tons of appeal. More of a field blend than a true Zinfandel, the 2014 is soft and forward, with expressive red-fleshed fruit, bright acidity and terrific overall balance. The Old Vine is 77% Zinfandel and a generous 23% mixed blacks. Best of all, the Old Vine Zinfandel is a fabulous value.”
