Wine World Wines Thursday September 20th, 2018:

Château La Nerthe Les Cassagnes Côtes-du-Rhône Rosé

The color is pale pink fuchsia, very bright. The nose is frank, lively, expressive, on white flowers and citrus fruits (pink grapefruit). The palate is fresh and the gooseberry meets again the grapefruit. A wine of great freshness and easy pleasure!
A versatile companion to many styles of cuisine. Enjoy with cheeses and fruit or pair with salmon dishes, poultry in light to medium weight sauces, and fresh salads.

Banfi La Pettegola Vermentino 2017

Pale yellow in color, this wine is delightfully fresh with an intense fruit forward bouquet of exotic fruit and spices typical of the Mediterranean coast. On the palate, it is fresh and crisp with well-balanced acidity and a clean finish. Lovely as an aperitif. Also ideal with seafood, salads, sandwiches and vegetable dishes.

Cline North Coast Viognier 2017

Cline Viognier shows juicy tropical fruit, fresh apricot and notes of mandarin orange and grapefruit. It’s luscious and fullbodied with a slight crisp acidity.
Viognier can be a tricky grape to grow. It buds early and is susceptible to frost. The grape has a thick skin and benefits from a long ripening period to develop full flavors. Vines bask in the sun during the day but experience cool nighttime temperatures contributing to the wine’s fullbody weight and nice acidity.

Via Revolucionaria Bonarda Pura 2017 La Arboleda, Tupungato, Uco Valley, Mendoza

This 100% Carbonic Macerated Bonarada was harvested separately at 4 different times and then blended together. A seductively perfumed nose evokes musky dank fruits of blueberry, cherry, and raspberry. The vibrant, fruit dominated nose, leads to a soft and round mid palate, held together by firm tannins and bright acidity.

Poppy Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 Paso Robles, California

This wine displays blueberry, black cherry, and currant flavors with nuances of licorice, violets and cigar box all wrapped together with a dash of vanilla and mocha. Medium to full-bodied, well-balanced, with soft tannins, this wine shows tremendous dimension, with a seamless finish that lingers throughout the palate.

Casir dos Santos Avatar Malbec 2017 Agrelo, Mendoza, Argentina

Presents a vibrant red color with glints of bordeaux. Great aromatic intensity. It expresses in a very fresh way, with red fruits and a remarkable sweetness. In the mouth it’s balanced with round and sweet tannins, rich and with a marked acidity.

Argyros Estate Atlantis White 2016 Santorini, Greece

Produced on the Volcanic Island Santorini, this wine is made from 90% Assyrtiko, 5% Aidani, 5% Athiri. These vines were never affected by the Phylloxera louse, which destroyed vines all over the world in the late 1800s. The solution to the Phylloxera problem is to graft European vines (vitus vinifera) onto American rootstock (vitus labrusco) which is impervious to the louse. While most vines around the world are grafted these vines are all on their original rootstock. The vines are between 30 and 150 years old and are trained and woven into baskets on the ground called “kouloura” (do a google image search!)

This wine really has unique flavors, crisp and acidic with full round fruit and nice complexity, I love it!

This will go wonderfully with any seafood, I’m suddenly craving Mussels…

From the producer: “Crystal-clear yellow color, distinctively flavored with citrus overtones. The relatively high acidity of Asyrtico gives it a crisp freshness, while the vineyard’s extremely low yield offers body, structure and substance.”

Critical Acclaim
Wine & Spirits 90pts
An assyrtiko blended with small amounts of athiri and aidani, this is earthy and saline, with a touch of nuttiness that gives it a sun-warmed feeling. Gravelly and firm, it ends searingly dry, cleansed by a crisp, citrusy acidity.

Domaine Gauby Calcinaires 2015 Côtes du Roussillon-Villages

Black Grenache 15% Vines of about ten years, Carignan 10% of twenty years, Mourvèdre 25% Vines of about ten years, Syrah 50% Vines of about ten years
Grown on Limestone, clay – limestone, schists, made with all natural wild yeasts, this wine feels incredibly natural and beautiful on the palate. There’s a term “garrigue” that is used to describe the flavor of the scrubland in the south of France, this wine has it in spades! Côtes du Roussillon-Villages is in the very lower left corner of France. You might recognize these varietals as also being part of the Rhone blend, Syrah and Mourvèdre, being more recent additions to the Roussillon. This general blend of grapes can create very different wines depending on percentages and terrior, which all seem to share the ability to be very adaptable food wines. Serve this with almost anything you’d pair with a red wine. We’re about to drink the rest the bottle I’m sampling with grilled skirt steak and cauliflower. I know it’s going to be amazing.

I found this on the producer’s website, it’s been “Google Translated” to English so it’s a little wonky, but great anyhow, especially the last sentence:
Our job is to respect the environment, to take nature as an ally, a source of inspiration by referring to many cultures, leaving aside chemical and synthetic products and using herbal “home-made” preparations (more twenty) and other natural products such as essential oils, compost, etc.
A work that allows us to draw the quintessence of our terroirs and to seek elegance and freshness in our wines. The goal is to preserve the natural balance and to remain free of our choices. We are and will remain peasants.

Huia Marlborough Pinot Gris 2017 Marlborough, New Zealand $19.99
Huia is a family owned vineyard producing organic and biodanamic wines. Here’s the production notes from the winery: “After hand harvesting, pressing and settling, the juice goes to tank for fermentation. Two thirds of the juice awaits natural fermentation before being moved to neutral French oak barrels for the fermentation and maturation with lees stirring. The remainder is inoculated with wine yeast and fermented through to wine in tank.” This Pinot Gris (same grape as pinot grigio) is subtle and beautiful, reminds me of the lovely Alsatian wines. “A mixture of honeysuckle, pear, apple and quince aromas abound on the nose, followed by white peach and some spice on the well-balanced and smooth, dry palate.” is what the winery gives as tasting notes, I can’t disagree!

This wine will go great with Thai or other lighter asian fare, the bit of creaminess up front with its crisp cutting finish will pair well with creamy seafood pasta dishes, or a grilled whitefish marinated in white wine olive oil and a touch of honey, throw some fresh basil or rosemary on top!
Marietta Román Estate Grown Zinfandel 2015 North Coast California $22.99
84% Zinfandel, 11% Petite Sirah, 5% Barbera
I know, I know, we just had a Zin month before last, but this one is different than that one, I know you’re going to enjoy seeing a different expression of the grape. Have I mentioned that we looooove Zinfandel? It’s America’s grape. Similar to Malbec in Argentina, it started elsewhere (probably Croatia) but now it’s ours! My folks were great Zinfandel evangelists and believed if properly made, Zins could age as well as Cabernet or a fine Bourdeaux. (I’ve had many a great bottle over 20 even 30 years old from their collection) Back to the subject at hand. This wine is named for Marietta’s Cellar Master Román Cisneros who has worked at the winery for over thirty years. Román said, before the wine was named, that it is his new favorite house wine, so the wine was named for him. Much of the work at the winery is done by hand, with an eye toward sustainability. Marietta has a small team and is focused heavily on their employees. Scot Bilbro is the second generation owner and winemaker at Marietta after his father, Chris Bilbro founded Marietta Cellars in 1979. Chris cut his wine business teeth by working at Bandiera founded by his grandparents Emil and Luduina Bandiera in 1937.

The Román is full bodied, but goes lean and clean through the mid-palate, with a long lingering finish. Dale says it drinks more like an old-world wine and I agree. I love drinking Zin with this elegance! This would be great with spicy grilled Italian sausage, maybe with sautéed mushrooms and carmelized onion served on top of wasabi mashed potatoes?

90 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
A blend of 84% Zinfandel, 11% Petite Sirah and 5% Barbera, aged for 12 months in neutral barrels, the 2015 Zinfandel Roman sports a deep garnet-purple color and nose of black plums, blackberries and licorice with touches of tar, charcoal, salami and Indian spices. Full-bodied with firm, slightly rustic tannins, it offers great fruit expression in the mouth with freshness and purity coming through on the long finish. (4/2017)

90 points Vinous
The 2015 Román is a gorgeous, Zinfandel-based red. Bright, plump and exuberant, the 2015 offers striking depth as well as freshness. This is an incredibly delicious, inviting wine. Even better, it is a tremendous value. Petite Syrah and Barbera round out the blend. Succulent red berry, spice, leather and floral notes add to the wine’s silky personality. I was quite frankly blown away by the wines I tasted at Marietta this year. Brothers Scot and Jake Bilbro have decided to each concentrate on separate properties. In practical terms that means Scot is now running Marietta on his own, while Jake operates Limerick Lane. One of the recent developments at Marietta is that most of the wines are now vintage-dated, with the exception of the Old Vine, Marietta’s flagship, which will remain a non-vintage blend, as it always has been. Aside from being absolutely delicious, these wines offer superb value to the consumer, something that is getting harder and harder to find. I can’t recommend these wines highly enough. 84% Zinfandel, 11% Petite Sirah, 5% Barbera (AG) (1/2017)

The Wine buyers (Andrew and Dale) pick two wines each month for you that we love, and you will too. One white (or rose, or bubbly) and one red. The total value of wines will exceed $40, and the longer you sign up for, the better the deal! Our goal is to show excellent wines in a wide range of styles. We only choose wines we have tasted and loved. We don’t base our choices on ratings. (Although we’ll often include them, for your reference, in the write-up)

Sokol Blosser Rosé of Pinot Noir Estate Cuvee 2017 (Dundee Hills Oregon)
Sokol Blosser was founded in 1971, and focuses on sustainable agriculture. The winery is managed by second generation siblings Alex and Alison Sokol Blosser. Alex is also the head wine maker. Their vineyards are certified USDA Organic by Oregon Department of Agriculture. Sokol Blosser is known for their stunning Pinot Noir, so you would expect their Rosé made from all Estate fruit to be great as well, and it is! Here’s a description from the Wine Enthusiast, who gave the wine 91pts:
“Too many rosés go for power over finesse; this takes the lighter path, to good effect. Made from all organic estate fruit fermented entirely in stainless steel, it’s fragrant and spicy at just 12% alcohol. But there’s no lack of flavor: fresh strawberry, pink grapefruit and blood orange. A hint of pepper spices up the finish.”
Rosé, of course, goes with everything, but I’d pair this with a crisp summer salad, maybe with shrimp and avocado… This wine is lighter than your typical Rosé of Pinot Noir, but it’s certainly bold enough to stand up to salmon or light pork dishes.
This wine will probably change a bit, getting a little more complex and refined over the next year or so, but I wouldn’t hold on to it for too long!

Domaine Des Remizières Crozes-Hermitage 2016 (Crozes-Hermitage, Rhone Valley, France)
100% Syrah. Crozes-Hermitage is in the northern part of the Rhone valley where Syrah rather than Grenache is the most prominent red grape. Domaine Des Remizières is run by the Desmeures family, now in their fourth generation. This wine is made from 100% de-stemmed Syrah grapes aged in large (likely older, and neutral) oak casks to create a pure expression of the grapes and the terroir in which they are grown. This wine is delightfully fresh and clean, while simultaneously bold and forward. It’s a little young still, the tannins are dense and chewy. (which I love! but it’ll settle down in a year or two) Drink it now or hold it for a few years. There’s a touch of what I describe as “lavender” that can be typical of Rhone wines. Dark fruit flavors here with a touch of olive in the finish. It almost smells like grilled meat. Chop up some fresh sage, and rosemary, a little garlic, mix in some Olive Oil and vermouth, a drop of Bragg’s, (maybe a very small amount of honey to get a good crisp.) throw in a skirt steak, grill it hot and quick, this wine will be a perfect match!

Wine World Wines, Thursday June 21st 2018:

Fleurs de Prairie Rose 2017 Cotes de Provence, France
Crafted in the traditional Provencal style, Fleurs de Prairie is a pale salmon color with delicate flavors of strawberry, rose petals and herbs. Its bright, refreshing acidity makes it a perfect companion with a meal or as an aperitif.

Cà Montini Terre di Valfredda Pinot Grigio 2018 Trentino Italy
Lemony fresh and breezy on the nose, with aromas of wet stone, apricot, pear, and Maraschino cherry. Bone-dry and mineral-laden on the palate, it presents fresh squeezed lemon juice with just a hint of green apple skin.
Pairs well with a variety of dishes including fish, white meats, soups, pasta and risotto.

Line 39 Sauvignon Blanc 2016 California
Vibrant aromas of grapefruit and lemon with subtle grassy characters and a crisp clean finish. This wine is a fine accompaniment to shellfish or on its own.

Santa Tresa Frappato 2017 Terre Siciliane, Italy
The nose shows blueberry with earthiness, undergrowth and herbs. Light smoky cherry with a hint of tart notes. Chunky ‘chewy’ smoky sour cherry & tarry minerality. Juicy raspberry, wild strawberry, aniseed and red liquorice. Complex. Youthful. Dry. Typical Italian high acidity. Med tannins, med body, med+ finish. Lovely juicy fresh cherry, strawberry, raspberry. A good food wine.

Zorzal Terroir Unico Malbec 2017 Mendoza, Argentina
Deep, shining red color. Very mineral on the nose, with strong evidence of calcareous soils, such as chalk. Very fresh on entry, with great volume and texture. The tannins are somewhat edgy and the finish is a long one.
The destemmed grapes fermented in cement vats with indigenous yeasts and was kept in those vats between five and ten months until bottling, as there are four bottling lots. The nose is very fruit-driven and mixes berries with a hint of pollen and honey, giving it an accessible and easy to understand profile. The palate is juicy, with cherry flavors and almost unnoticeable tannins. It ends dry, with seriousness.
91pts James Suckling

McPherson Sangiovese 2015 High Plains, Texas
Sangiovese is an Italian Cultivar well suited for sometimes unforgiving climates. We have worked with this variety more than a decade and developed a consistent style in homage to our favorite Chianti table wines of Tuscany. Notes of red licorice, black cherry cola, and bright balsamic strawberry. The wine ages in neutral French oak, adding a beautiful texture that brings further depth and richness to this wine.
