WINE CLUB! August 2017 Selections

“The first rule of WINE CLUB is… ALWAYS talk about WINE CLUB!”
The Wine buyers (Andrew and Dale) pick two wines each month for you that we love, and you will too. One white (or rose, or bubbly) and one red. The total value of wines will exceed $40, and the longer you sign up for, the better the deal! (see below for pricing and perks) Our goal is to show excellent wines in a wide range of styles.   We only choose wines we have tasted and don’t base our choices on ratings.(Although we’ll often include them in the write-up)

Jolo Vineyards, Golden Hallows 2016
Yadkin Valley, North Carolina

Vidal Blanc 55%, Viognier 35%, Traminette 10%
$23.99

Dale and I like to tell our wine reps to bring us the “Weird Stuff”, meaning strange varietals from interesting places. This is the first East Coast U.S. wine we’ve used for the wine club. Yadkin Valley, N.C is now a designated American Viticultural Area or “AVA”, which makes it a bona fide American wine region. The primary crop in Yadkin until recently was tobacco, today there are 38 wineries in the region. The grapes in this blend are all highly aromatic grapes. The primary grape, Vidal Blanc, is a hybrid most notably used to make icewine in Canada and Sweden, it’s high in sugar, has great acidity, can survive colder climates. Viognier is a part of the “Rhone Blend” providing floral aromatics and some viscosity in the mouth feel, it’s often used in small percentages to add complexity to Syrah.  Traminette is a cross between Geuwurtztraminer and “Joannes Seyve” a french/american hybrid, with the purpose of creating a hearty, full cluster grape with the flavors found in Gewurtztraminer.
This is a fun and funky wine!

I’ll post the winery’s description below, I’d like to add that this wine will pair wonderfully with spicy food, Asian, Indian, anything with complex flavors.
This is a very dry crisp wine, but with lots of funky fruit!

“2016 was a very hot and dry growing season. With little rainfall and hot sunny day slowly ripened the fruit and concentrated the flavors. This wine is crisp, clean and refreshing. Equal parts of elegance and delicate aromatics offer pineapple, passion fruit and white flowers with loads of Asian pear, freshly peeled apple, and pineapple dancing on the palate. The finish is crisp and rounded with a citrus and wet stone. This is a very enjoyable wine alone and also pairs well with shellfish, white fish, chicken, roasted pork, pastas in butter or pesto sauces. This wine should be consumed within the next 4 to 5 years to savor the harmonious balance of fruit and acidity. Enjoy!”

oh, and on a side note, only 5000 bottles of this were made, and each bottle is numbered individually.

Tenuta Sant’ Antonio Monti Garbi Ripasso 2013
Veneto Italy

Corvina and Corvinone 70% – Rondinella 20% – Croatina and Oseleta 10%.
$22.99

Ripasso! A style we love here at Wine World, and the first one we’ve used for wine club. We think this is a wonderful example. Ripasso is a sort of combination of Amarone and regular Valpolicella. Amarone is made from grapes that have been dried, so that they are almost raisins. Ripasso, is “passed through” the Amarone leavings and refermented, making for a bolder, more complex wine than “standard” Valpolicella.

Here’s what the winery has to say:
“The wine is a lovely ruby red color. Aromas of red fruit and cherries. The flavors are slightly sweetish, soft yet powerful, fresh, and full-flavored with a trace of tannin and a spicy aftertaste. Pasta entrées with meat ragout and Italian sauces, grilled, roast or stewed white meats, hard medium-ripe cheeses.” Also… Pizza!!, Cambozola Cheese!!
