La Spinetta
Il Rose di Casanova 2015
Casanova, Tuscany, Italy
50% Sangiovese and 50% Prugnolo Gentile.
Finally a Rose! Many of you know that Dale and I are both enamoured with dry Rose. I imagine you wondering “Why haven’t they chosen a dry rose for WINE CLUB?” Now we have! This is a beautiful wine, both delicate and full flavored, lots of complexity, layer upon layer is revealed with each sip. it spends only one hour in contact with the skins while on the press, then is aged for three months on the lees. the dead yeast cells left over from fermentation, this can add nut, bread, and yeast flavours to the wine depending on the yeast. This rose is made with yeast occuring naturally in the winery. The label is cool too, it’s a representation of a rhinoceros from 1515 by Albrecht Dürer, who had never seen one, the woodcut was based on a drawing sent to him by an unknown artist. Notice the armoured plates, curled horn on the back, and scaly legs. There’s no particular connection to the estate, other than head winemaker Giorgio Rivetti being a fan of the illustration.
The tech. sheet says to pair with poultry, fish and any type of appetizer, I’d add table water crackers topped with with Prociutto, Camembert, Capers, and thinly sliced red onion, because it’s easy and what we had for dinner last night!
Here’s the detailed tech. sheet for the wine:

Chateau de Noblesse
Le vin rouge 2013
Bandol, Provence France
95% Mourvedre 5% Grenache
This wine is small production, from a multi generation family estate. It’s a direct import from Grassroots, one of the smaller more specialized distributors that we work with. This wine is young, amazing now, but I plan to tuck at least a couple of bottles away at the house for a few years and see where it goes. Wikipedia says that reds from Bandol usually require 10 years of ageing before developing fully. The (adorable, and very informative) website for the Chateau gives this advice: “When young, it is perfect with white meats, later on it is perfect with red meat (roast beef), or with soft cheeses. When it has aged somewhat, 7 to 10 years, it can accompany game, marinated or stewed meat. You should open the bottle 1 to 3 hours before sampling.” I’d lean in the direction of grilled pork and roast beef, rather than chicken. Bandol is in the region of Provence, southeast of Marseilles, near the Mediterranean, Mourvedre, originally a Spanish grape, is the primary red grape of the region and throughout Provence. Full disclosure… I did not open this wine 1-3 hours before drinking, but I swirled A LOT. I would recommend decanting this wine and letting sit around for a bit if you have time. Yum.

Michel Gassier, Noste Pais, Costieres De Nimes, White 2013
60% Grenache, 20% Clairette, 15% Roussanne, 5% Viognier
We bought this for the shop because we really liked it, it had a nice rating, and we figured we hand sell it. Then I took a bottle home and had it with food. It was amazing! We decided immediately to use it for wine club.
Michel Gassier is a prominent winemaker in the south of France. His family has been maikng wine in the region for four generations.
“Michel Gassier’s winemaking style is as non interventionist as possible, resulting in this elegant, pure wine.”
Here’s a blurb I found describing the charictaristics of this wine:
“The pale yellow color tinted in green announces a wine with a great deal of freshness and purity. The complex nose reveals floral and mineral notes with accents of fresh citrus fruits. lively and fresh, the aromas of flowers and white fruits, blends with flint. The soft finish evinces a great deal of minerality.” I can add that it has a full round mouth feel, with a real sense of viscosity, a touch of nuttiness, and lovely aromatics… Yum!
You could serve this with almost anything you’d serve a white wine with, think about dishes from southern France or Northern Italy.
and here’s the review from Robert Parker:
RP92
The Wine Advocate – “One of my favorite whites from the region, as well as a year in, year out value, the 2013 Costières de Nîmes Nostre Païs Blanc is 60% Grenache Blanc (always from the same parcel) and the rest Clairette, Roussanne and Viognier. Fermented one-third in barrel and aged eight months on lees, it offers fabulous notes of stone fruits, buttered citrus, white flowers and honeysuckle to go with a medium-bodied, fresh, lively and pure style. While it doesn’t skimp on texture, the focus is more on freshness and purity.”

Seghesio Barbera 2011
This comes from the “Home Ranch” vineyard originally planted by Eduardo Seghesio in 1895. Seghesio is known for great Italian varietals and Zinfandel. After five generations the winery is still family owned and operated. This Barbera is a big bold wine with black cherry flavor, blueberry, dark chocolate the wine has an easy complexity with subtle vanilla and a hint of tobacco around the edges. There’s some nice acidity and silky tannins (softened with a little age) which give it a velvety mouthfeel, an absolute pleasure to drink!
This wine would normally sell for about $37, we got a great price for it as an older vintage. It’s drinking beautifully now, I imagine a few years ago it was a bit prickly!

Les Caillottes Sancerre 2014

Sancerre is an Appellation in the Loire valley in France known primarily for its Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir is produced there also as both red and rose.

The Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre tends to be very crisp and have a minerality unique to the region, which makes it a bit different stylistically than any other SB in the world. As a Direct Import from our friends at Advintage Distributing, this wine is a great value for a lovely version of Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc!

Try lemon-herbed chicken, grilled fish with mango salsa, caprese salad, mushroom and goat cheese tart or seafood pasta.
Fresh goat cheeses, creamy Brie, triple creme cheeses, ricotta, feta and Parmigiano-Reggiano all go well with Sancerre, as do oysters and mussels

Frescobaldi Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva 2012

Sangiovese and complementary grapes (Malvasia nera, Colorino, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon)

Nippozzano is an Castle in Rufina, originally built in 1371, this is of the historic wines of the property.
This is a serious wine, Chianti is known for having high acidy and firm tannins, Nippozzano is no exception, but with dark and elegant fruit, the producer’s notes say it well: Nipozzano Riserva is a lovely ruby-red. The nose opens with dark wild berries and cherry, hints of candy floss and pleasant floral notes of lilac and chocolate. The spicy component emerges with nuances of clove and green peppercorn. The palate is characterized by a distinct tactile approach in which the stamp of the terroir is underlined by a lively minerality. The tannin texture is tight but not sharp which is also an expression of the uniqueness of the soils of Nipozzano. The finish returns to the intense fruity notes already identified on the nose.

Pair with barbecued meat and beef stews, aged cheeses.

JS92
James Suckling – “Lots of mineral, dried berry and cherry aromas and flavors. Full body, bright acidity and a silky finish. Plenty going on. Love the dark fruit and mineral character on the finish. Drink or hold.”
(Andrew’s note- drinking well now, but a couple or five years might soften this wine very nicely)

Here’s a short article about the Nippozzano castle with pictures of wine barrels lined inside the castle walls

WINE CLUB
April 2016 Selections
Pinot Noir! and more Pinot Noir! (with just a little Chardonnay)

Gloria Ferrer Blanc De Noirs NV
Methode Champenoise

92% Pinot Noir 9% Chardonnay

One of our favourites for many years, this is an outstanding bubbly. Very slightly pink in color persistent bubbles, lovely complexity, and a long clean finish, every time we treat ourselves to a bottle of this I’m always surprised that it’s even better than I remembered!

The Blanc De Noir is made in the traditional Champagne Method, with a secondary fermentation in the bottle. In Champagne only three grapes are allowed, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the latter two are both red grapes. When the wine is all chardonnay it’s called Blanc De Blancs, when it’s made from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, or some combination thereof it’s called Blanc De Noirs. The juice of the grapes is white it’s only when the juice is allowede to rest on the skins after crushing that the wine becomes red by soaking up color, flavor, and tannin from the skins.

This wine, like most Sparkling wines, is Non-Vintage, allowing the wine maker to blend from different years, in order to have a consistent house style.

We choose WINE CLUB based on what we have tasted and loved, not by score, but it is nice to know that this wine was given 90pts by both the Wine Spectator and The Wine Enthusiast!

Below are the tasting notes from the Winery, which are spot-on

Click to access Gloria-Ferrer-Caves-Vineyards-Blanc-de-Noirs-Tasting-Notes.pdf

Our Blanc de Noirs is predominantly made from hand-harvested Pinot Noir grapes, the hallmarks of which are a vibrant red fruit character. The creamy palate and rosy hue are a result of a small addition of Vin Gris, which was blended into the base cuvée. Over forty different clones and selections of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are planted on our 340-acre estate in the Sonoma Carneros district. This allows us to consistently produce cuvées with complexity and clear fruit expression.

TASTING NOTES
Bright strawberry and black cherry aromas with subtle vanilla highlights. Creamy cherry, lemon and cola flavors combine with a lush palate, lively bubbles and a persistent finish.

FOOD PAIRINGS
Outstanding with crab, Thai cuisine, roast pork, quail, foie gras or semi-sweet desserts. Seasoning affinities include star anise, plum sauce and tarragon. Look to triple aged gouda or hard aged cheeses with persimmons and hazelnuts for the cheese course.

WINEMAKING
• Whole cluster pressed to avoid bitter compounds
• Juice is naturally settled overnight (debourbage) to encourage a clean fermentation
• Proprietary yeast used for secondary fermentation provides a delicate house signature
• Cuvee is a blend of 18 different base wines fermented in stainless steel tanks 55F to 60F
• 5% to 7% cold-soaked Pinot Noir juice (Vin Gris) is blended into the base wine for color and to establish the creamy notes in the finish
• Wine spent a year and a-half en tirage (on the yeast)

Willamette Valley Vineyards Whole Cluster Pinot Noir 2014

We used this wine in a seminar last fall, it showed remarkably well and was a favourite of the seminar. Dale and I tasted it again a couple of weeks ago and found it even better as it has matured a bit in the bottle. There is some very nicely complex dark fruit here, cherry and cassis, a clean wine, not light, true Pinot Noir!

This wine is produced partially using the technique of Carbonic Maceration, in which the wine starts fermentation while still in the grape, which produces a brighter, less tannic wine, that is not intended for long cellaring, as the wines produced by this method usually lack the structure needed for proper aging, although… I’ve had older Beaujolais that I think aged wonderfully, and this wine is certainly not devoid of structure! Anyhow.. The Whole Cluster is amazing now, and will be for at least the next two or three years.

For pairings, Spicy grilled pork loin, a good Cuban Ham Sandwich, Grilled salmon with sauteed baby portabellos and tomato, throw some fresh rosemary, in the mix… Yum!!

Another highly rated wine in the $20-25 price range, both Wine & Spirits and The Wine Enthusiast give this wine 90pts

Here’s what the Enthusiast has to say:
“Partially carbonic macerated (think Beaujolais), this bright and fruity wine has extra complexity in this new vintage. An interesting whiff of funk leads to forward and appealing cherry and plum fruit flavors. This is a great bottle to pop with a grilled salmon.”

WINE CLUB
March 2016 Selections

Protea Chenin Blanc 2014 Western Cape, South Africa
South Africa is known for its great Chenin Blanc, and this one is a stunner! Crisp and clean, nice mineralty, and a full mouthfeel, peach and melon… This was suggested as a WINE CLUB selection by Erica Crawford, who with her husband Kim, established the Kim Crawford winery. She was here showing off their Love Block wines, which are wonderful, though a little pricey for WINE CLUB. Dale and I opened a bottle and decided it would be a great choice. Mom tasted this one as well, and raved about it. (she also loved the Priorat) Anyhow, here’s what Wilfred Wong of Wine.com has to say –
“A really cool wine (aka: I like this stuff), the 2014 Protea Chenin Blanc has beautiful flavors, is very fresh and drinks so nicely. I would ask the chef to make a shredded chicken salad, with romaine lettuce, pickled scallions and dressed with a light touch of sesame oil. Medium straw color; ripe honey dew aroma, appealing, medium depth; off-dry, medium acidity, well balanced; fine white peach, melon flavors; medium finish, lively aftertaste. (Tasted: June 26, 2015, San Francisco, CA)”
I would add that the slight minerality of this wine will pair wonderfully with light seafood dishes!

Bluegray Priorat 2012 Spain
I saw this wine on a list and thought to give it a try, as this is in a very attractive price range for a Priorat blend. It’s 45% Garnacha, 30% Mazuelo, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Mazuelo is also used in Rioja blends and is genetically identical to Carignan, which is grown widely throughout Europe and primarily used as a blending grape.
This wine is a big dark inky thing, clean dark fruit, nicely complex, definitely old world, clean and well balanced with nice acidity and tannins. It’s relatively high in alcohol at %15, and it shows up in the glass as an asset to this wine.
I’d have this wine with grilled or smoked meats, lamb shish kebab, even a heavy roast if you choose to age the Bluegray for a couple of years. A little char would match the intensity of this wine quite well, this wine will heighten the effect of any hot pepper you use.

I found a couple consumer reviews on this Priorat:

“This one opens quickly. Lovely garnet color with ruby tips.
Nose of blackberry and tobacco with a dark chocolate fade.
Opening of black fruits favoring blackberry and plums with French oak, slate and leather.
Medium bodied, above average acidity with a lovely complex tannin that emerges quickly but lingers long.”

“drinks above the price tag, stewed berry and earth on the nose, soft entry, powerful as it crosses the palate, raspberry, plum, smoke and cassis flavors, a heavy dose of tannin, the finish is long, had with a beefy stew, a structured, strong performing wine for the price, excellent value”

Cooper Hill Pinot Gris 2013
At Wine World representatives from our various distributors drop by throughout the week and bring wine to taste. When Dale and I tasted this Pinot Gris we both loved it immediately and ordered a few bottles, funny thing though, we already had it! Same vintage! (Dale must have tasted it already and bought some, before I came back to Wine World) Pinot Gris is the same grape as Pinot Grigio, but has a very different expression in Oregon. To my pallet this 2013 Pinot Gris has a wonderful delicate floral complexity, great for sipping or with lighter dishes, especially with a little spice and acidity maybe a thai-style squid or shrimp salad, a simple steamed whitefish on a bed of gently sauteed cabbage and mushrooms, seared scallops with garlic butter sauce and pasta, or how about chili lime chicken kabobs?
Here’s what Cooper Hill says about this wine:
Bright and aromatic.
This crisp Pinot Gris is loaded with pear, melon and peach that explode on the palate.
Made with Organic and Biodynamic grapes
(which means a great deal of care was taken in getting the best fruit possible!)

Stag’s Leap Hands of Time Red Blend 2012
This is essentially a Napa Valley Bourdeaux-style blend 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Merlot. We were impressed by the generous complexity of this wine. 2012 is a stellar vintage for California in general, this wine drinks wonderfully now, but promises to age nicely with full fruit, nice acidity and full, but silky tannins. Stag’s Leap is a well known producer of quality Napa wines, and Hands of Time is no exception.
Here’s what the winery says about the name: “Along a shady walkway on the tranquil grounds of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars one comes across a succession of limestone plaques, each bearing a handprint. These handprints comprise the Hands of Time exhibit, an enduring tribute to the many people who contributed to the winery’s
history over the years and who have gone on to become celebrated winemakers and viticulturists in their own right. With a tradition of mentoring that dates back to our founding in 1970, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars has been a springboard for many a storied winemaker’s career. This wine is a tribute to our alumni whose unwavering vision of crafting elegant and balanced wines has been passed down from teacher to student, and through the hands of time.

Jan_2016_WINECLUB

Our January selections:

Refugio Ranch Petite Sirah 2012 Santa Ynez Valley
When we tasted this big, dark, soulful powerhouse of a wine, Dale and I decided would be a a great value at the $25 price point and bought some for the shop.   It had the fruit, complexity, and balance, to age well, but is drinking very well now, a serious wine!
After doing some research we found that this is a small production wine released at $34, the winery is on to the next vintage, but we still have some.   Here’s what The Wine Enthusiast says:
91 POINTS The nose lures one in with very approachable aromas of black pepper, bacon fat, blackberry, anise and toasted chia seeds. The licorice quality powers the palate as well, further made delicious by black cherries, blueberries and game. The tannic grip is a bit firm right now, so wait until mid-2016.  PRICE $34

Meurgey-Croses Macon Uchizy 2014
This is an Un-Oaked Chardonnay from Burgundy, a great value for the $20 we sell it for in the shop. (as you’ll see in the article below, the release price was $32) We’re big fans of Chardonnay in this style.and loved this wine when we tasted it!   This is a Jean Pierre Chambas selection, imported by our distributor Aleph.  Some of you may know him from the seminars he’s done at Wine World over the years.  I’ve since done a little research and found this article about the wine in Montecristo Magazine:
“Uchizy is a small town in the Mâcon area of Burgundy. Minerality and aromatics are broadly applied characteristics of the chardonnay produced in this region, and the Meurgey-Croses Macon-Uchizy ($32) is a prime example. Pierre Meurgey makes this wine, both fermenting and aging, in stainless steel tanks. He says it emphasizes the natural freshness of the wine, and the appeal of its fruit, mostly pineapple and pear with a hint of lime, really bursts from the glass. Exceptional.
Having said that, the wine is generous, well-structured, almost personifying balance with its fruit and acidity. It is not a shy wine, with a certain viscosity that belies it being chardonnay. Meurgey himself comes from a line of Burgundian estate managers, oenologists, and winemakers, and he has added his mother’s family name, Croses, to his relatively new winemaking venture. At this price, you get real Burgundy character without taking out a loan. You might even want to try a similarly priced chardonnay or two from the Okanagan and Australia, just to see how things can be so different between regions. It’s a great way to learn which way your own palate is leaning, as well.”
