The Wine buyers (Andrew and Dale) pick two wines each month for you that we love, and you will too. One white (or rose, or bubbly) and one red. The total value of wines will exceed $40, and the longer you sign up for, the better the deal! Our goal is to show excellent wines in a wide range of styles.   We only choose wines we have tasted and loved.   We don’t base our choices on ratings. (Although we’ll often include them, for your reference,  in the write-up)

Freemark Abbey Sauvignon Blanc 2015 Napa Valley California  $23.99

Ok, yes, we do love Sauvignon Blanc. Dale and I were both blown away by this wine, one of those moments where we just kind of look at each other and nod. It shows refined citrus and pear and apple, all the while presenting a light honeyed creaminess, and a delicate bit of earthiness that grounds the wine and adds to its remarkable complexity. This wine has just a touch of older French oak which contributes to this complexity without being overt, or even noticeable.

Broiled Cod with lemon and thyme, and green beans, Grilled Vegetable Pasta with Parmesan Reggiano, Crab Cakes

Freemark Abbey began in 1939, but was originally planted by Josephine Tychson Napa’s first female winemaker in 1886. Freemark Abbey famously participated in the “Judgment of Paris” (a blind tasting in 1976 comparing some of the top U.S. wines with the top French wines, American wines won both white and red categories!) and was the only one of the 11 participating U.S. wineries to be included in both categories. Ask me about the 1975 Cabernet Bosche I tasted a few months ago… Wow!

Arcanum Il Fauno di Arcanum 2013 Tuscany, Italy $29.99

Il Fauno di Arcanum is a Bordeaux Style Blend from the Southeast corner of Chianti Classico in Tuscany, owned by an American company, made by a French winemaker! 55% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. It’s a dark round thing, smooth but with nice structure. A touch lavender in the nose, maybe a little coffee mixed in with the dark fruit, continuing and in the mouth but with an underlying herbal quality. The wine lingers and grows longer with every sip. Yum!

Filet Mignon, a little mushroom sauce on top…
This Lentil and Egg Stew: https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/lentil-and-egg-stew
Fancy homemade cheeseburgers, I recommend Gruyère Cheese and avocado

The Arcanum estate has been owned by the Jackson family since 1994. Although most known for their Kendall-Jackson brand, the family owned company has holdings all over the world and makes great terrior driven wines. Winemaker Pierre Seillan has worked with the Jackson family since the 1990s on projects such as the high end California Vérité wines and of Saint-Émilion Château Lassègue.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gave this wine 94pts, here’s the review:
“It’s hard not to be smitten with the 2013 Il Fauno di Arcanum. This blend of 55% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot is a rich and lasting Tuscan red that offers ample power and concentration. There are points of greenness here with crushed peppercorn and wild sage, backed by dark fruit aromas of plum and blackberry. Yet the Merlot component does much to smooth out and enrich the mouthfeel.”

Broc Cellars Love White, 2015, Madera, California
We love a Rhone style blend at Wine World, and this 90% Marsanne, 7% Rousanne, 3 % Viognier wine fits the bill. Broc Cellars focuses on site specific wines, all grapes are grown sustainably, organically, or biodynamically. The grapes for this wine come from “Love Ranch” The wines are fermented using native yeasts, naturally occurring on the skins and in the winery. Round full and floral, with flavors of honeysuckle and cantaloupe.
As I’ve said before and will say again, Rhone blends White or Red are extremely adaptable food wines, different elements of the blend will come out with different foods. Roussane, the majority grape in this blend goes particularly well with seafood, especially dishes that are fully spiced or smoked, also great match for almost any spicy asian dish. This will be great with a Roast Chicken!
These other suggestions I found online that while sipping this wine made me hungry! Smoked Trout Chowder, Crab Salad with Ginger and Dried Orange Peel, Creamy Cauliflower Pasta

The British wine magazine Decanter like this wine too!
91pts Decanter
“This crystal clear classic white Rhone blend is ripe with honeysuckle and peach mixed with warm marzipan and toasty flavors. It is succulent with touch of dried herbs and a waxy texture.”

Levendi Symphonia Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, Napa Valley California
This was a mistake, a happy accident! Wetasted this and were given a price much too low for this wine. By the time the distributor caught the error, we’d already set it up for WINE CLUB. They graciously let us go ahead with the quoted price, as the mistake was theirs, so here we have a wonderful holiday surprise for you all.

Winemaker Alison Doran has been making wine in Napa for more than 30 years, and the Gianulias family has been involved in Napa wine since 1926. They focus on making big, extracted, lush wines, and Symphonia is a prime example.

Tastings.com gave this wine 92 points and the following description, which is accurate:
“Bright dark indigo color. Attractive aromas and flavors of caramelized fruits and nuts, berry pie a la mode, and chocolate rice bar with a satiny, bright, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and an effortless, appealing, medium-length dried cherries and toffee finish with fine tannins and light oak. A supple and attractive cabernet that will improve with time.”

I’ll add that this is classic Napa Cab, intense and extracted without being sweet. It’s great now, (just had my last sip) but couple years in the bottle will bring out some more sublte character, and if you grab an extra bottle (while we still have some!) and put it under the stairs for 10 years, you’ll be greatly rewarded!

As far as pairing… grilled meats! Especially Lamb. I’d reccomend a little honey, some rosemary and lots of garlic in the marinade. Slow cooked short ribs, anything with blue cheese… I’d might have this with grilled skirt steak, sliced about a quarter inch thick and spread a little Point Reyes Blue on when we eat it. Or maybe we’ll sit on the back porch with a box of crackers and a big wedge of Cambozola, maybe a little prosciutto and some sliced red onion for texture and spice! Yum!

For this Month’s WINE CLUB we have two great Wines for your Thanksgiving table!

Hugel Gewurztraminer 2013

At Wine World we always reccomend Gewurtztraminer as a perfect pairing with thanksgiving turkey. Alsatian Gewurtz is typically dry and full flavored, with a richness that tastes a little like lychee nut, a distinctive fruit. This wine also goes great with heavier aisian fare. These wines, including Alsatian Pinot Blanc and Riesling, age remarkably well, and develop really interesting and yummy character. The wines darken and the flavoprs become more intense over time. I recently had Gwurtz and Pinot Blanc from the late 80s that were amazing! The Hugel family has been making wine in Alsace since 1635.

Critical Acclaim:
90pts Wine Enthusiast
A sumptuously rich nose of musk, creamy peach and fragrant orchid precede a rounded, medium-dry palate of gentle, warm peach and plum. A pleasant bitter-honey edge lends even more grip to the textured midpalate. Savor this slowly and enjoy the tingling baking spices that enliven the palate.

From The Winery:
“The spice of Alsace and one of Famille Hugel’s signature wines. It is both aromatic and extroverted through its floral and spicy notes. Gewurztraminer is an invitation to accompany a variety of spicy Asian dishes as well as smoked salmon and strong cheeses.”

Julien Sunier Wild Soul VdF 2016
Julian Sunier is a well known producer of Gamay in Beaujolais. When hail destroyed a good portion of his crop in Regnie, he bought some gamay from another producer in Beaujolais and made a this wine, designated as a “Vin de France” as its composition doesn’t follow the rules. It’s all Gamay from old vines, 65yrs or older, which I belive shows in the intensity of the fruit. Wild Soul was aged on the lees in conrete eggs, no there’s no oak. We were struck by how delightful and different this wine is, bright cherry and rasberry flavors, almost candylike, but completely dry, and very “clean”. Wild Soul will be a great addition to your holiday table, a nice counterpoint to the bird, and a stellar match with cranberry sauce. I suspect it’ll even go well with pumpkin pie, although a nice Sauterne would be perfect… I’m getting hungry already!
