The total value of wines will exceed $40, and the longer you sign up for, the better the deal! Domaine des Aubuisieres Bernard Fouquet Cuvée de Silex Vouvray 2016

Vouvray is usually associated with the semi-sweet wine made from Chenin Blanc grown there.
This wine is Chenin Blanc, but dry, and wonderfully delicious!

The soil where this particular wine comes from is Clay-siliceous, hence the name “Cuvée de Silex”

Here’s the blurb from the Importer’s web site:
“Bernard Fouquet, a quiet-spoken man, is making some of the most serious Vouvray you’ll find these days. He is regarded in France and the international press as one of the top Vouvray producers. No one succeeds better than Bernard in capturing the mineral tones unique to Vouvray’s soil, with the marvelous balance of explosive fruit and titillating sensation of the Chenin Blanc grape.”
and about the production
“A sec (dry) Vouvray from 2 flint soil parcels. Entirely hand-harvested and only indigenous yeasts used. Fermented and matured in stainless steel thermo-regulated vats.”

Citrus, green melon, touch of almond, a hint of honey, minerals, and a great acidity that grounds the wine, yummy!
Try it with the Green Hill cheese we have in the shop, Grilled Chicken, or spicy fish cakes.

Praxis Lagrein Central Coast California 2008

Only 600 cases of this wine were produced.

Long time WINE CLUB members may remember that we used the Praxis Gewurtztraminer a couple of years back. Here’s another grape with a funny name from this winery. Lagrein is traditionally grown in Northern Italy and produces a big chewy wine with high acidity and tannins. It’s a ” this cool climate, high-elevation red varietal is a 500 year-old cross between Teroldego and Pinot Noir”

At 10 years old this 2008 is drinking fabulously now. Don’t be afraid to decant the wine and let it get some air for an hour or so, but be sure to taste it when you open it so you can see how it evolves.

This wine will turn your lips purple!
From the Praxis webpage:
“The color of the wine is saturated purple with red highlights. Aromas of coco nibs and mulberry jam rise from the glass with hints of mocha. On the palate, flavors of crushed black fruit, blueberry and cranberry are predominant. The wine is smooth with mouth filling tannins and a long, soft, plush finish evidencing the Pinot Noir heritage.”

Les Hauts Plateaux Rose 2017 Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France
Syrah – 40%; Grenache – 40%; Cinsault – 20%
The syrah is a characteristic red varietal of the northern part of the Côtes du Rhône. It gives to the wine its structure, its color and its aromas of small red berries, with a characteristic flavor of violet Rosé wines LES HAUTS PLATEAUX is of a salmon color, possessing great intensity on the nose (gooseberry), supple in texture, and easy to drink.
quiches, pissaladières, and crudités

Protea Chenin Blanc 2016 Swartland, South Africa
Crisp passion fruit and lemon leaf with a whiff of white pepper on the nose. The same flavours make an immediate impact on the palate which is well-rounded and medium-bodied. Acidity is kept in check – with no tart spikiness apparent. Smooth mouthfeel with just a hint of gravel and flinty flavour on its long zesty finish.
chilled avocado soup with shrimp and chives, sushi, Grilled fish

Cline Cellars, Farmhouse White 2017 California
41% Palomino, 25% Muscat Canelli, 22% Roussane, 6% Marsanne, 5%Viognier, 1% Riesling.
Emerald straw color. Toasty, earthy, tropical aromas and flavors of coconut yogurt and kiwi-papaya relish with a soft, fruity light body and a sleek, easy guanabana, melon rind, nutskin, and kaffir lime finish with fine, crunchy, fruit tannins and no oak. An interesting, exotically tropical white blend.
Grilled Fruit Salad, Salmon Burger, Chicken Fajitas

Bacchus Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 California
90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot Medium bodied with ripe plum, black currant, and blackberry flavors with a touch of mint. Cedar and dusty earth emerge on the long, layered finish.
Roasted Duck Breast with Pecan Purée, Grilled Steak with Salsa Verde. Pan-Roasted Veal Chops with Cabernet Sauce

Terra D’Oro Barbera 2015 Amador County
Terra d’Oro Barbera showcases the refreshing acidity of the grape with inviting aromas of sweet red fruit and fresh toasted bread. Enticing flavors of cherry cola and blueberries coat the palate, and polished tannins boast an elegant, round finish.
A perfect complement to savory dishes, Terra d’Oro Barbera pairs particularly well with pork roast or orecchiette bolognese. Roasted Boar, Tallegio Filled Crespelle, Lasagna

Steele Clear Lake Zinfandel 2014 Catfish Vineyard
A mouth full of bright red fruit, and many layers of jam, coffee, and eucalyptus along with good structure and
balance.
Catfish Vineyard was planted in 1901, the wine is a field blend of a number of varieties, including small amounts of carignan, alicante bouschet, cabernet sauvignon , petite sirah, and cinsault. Having more than one variety assured the old-time vintners that they would have some grapes to harvest regardless of the spring frosts or autumn storms.
Enjoy this wine with Cioppino, pasta or red meat in a cream-based sauce. Grilled venison, spice-rubbed leg or rack of lamb, pizza with pesto and sausage.

Calvet Cremant de Bordeaux Rose 2015
$17.99
90% Cab Franc 10% Merlot
Neat, neat, neat! A pink bubbly from Bordeaux, know more for its iconic red blends and sweet Sauternes. It’s rare to see a vintage bubbly in this price range, usually it will be a “Non-Vintage” blend of different years to preserve a house style. This wine is equally crisp and creamy with bright red berry notes, smells and tastes like flowers. (not that I eat flowers often, but I think you know what I’m trying to mean…)
Calvet has been making wine in France since 1818. Sixth generation direct descendant Jean-Christophe Calvet, and his eldest son Jean-Sebastien Calvet run the company. This Brut Rose is the Calvet’s reintroduction into the American market. They have holdings in the Rhone, Burgundy and Bordeaux, and were the largest French wine company in the 19th and most of the 20th century!
This, because of it’s tart and cream will go with a wide variety of foods, it’ll shine in a situation where there are many different appetizers served, or you could have it with Tuna Tartare, or Greek Yogurt with Fruit and Honey.

Gratia Raftacco Vineyards Malbec 2011
29.99 (Would normally be around $40/btl, we got a deal!)
100% Malbec
This is the first Malbec we’ve used for WINE CLUB and it’s a doozy! This wine was made by Andrea Marchiori and Luis Barraud. (who are also the viticulturist and winemaker for the highly acclaimed and fairly expensive Paul Hobbs “Cobos” Malbecs.)

This is a big round powerhouse of a wine. It gets 18 months of oak aging in french barrels, but the wine is so full that the oak is fully integrated. It’s very present but doesn’t stick out as a separate element which I think gives it a kind of rustic flair that I quite like.

Here are the tasting notes from the producer.
“Deep color, lustrous pigmentation, intensity with purple tones. Very ripe red and black fruits. Extremely well structured with oak, clover, white pepper and violets.”

This will go great with grilled meats and veggies.

Wine Enthusiast gave this wine 92pts here’s what they had to say
“Raspberry, blackberry and tobacco aromas settle in front of a chewy, round, solidly built palate. Medicinal berry flavors come with notes of rooty spice and resiny oak. A finely oaked finish holds root beer and dark-berry flavors that smoothly fade out. Drink through 2021”
(I think it could go quite a bit longer)

Wine World Wines Thursday March 15th 2018

Banfi Le Rime Pinot Grigio 2016
Pale straw in color, the wine offers impressive rich, ripe fruit aromas that hint of pear and white flowers. The wine is well balanced with an unusually lively acidity.
Le Rime takes its name from the lines that form on the sloping vineyard floor as water washes down the hillside, much as the ebb tide leaves its mark on the sandy beach. This Pinot Grigio catches that fresh minerality inherent to the terrain of southern Tuscany. The exclusive use of free-run juice at fermentation, followed by cool temperature fermentation and early bottling, makes the wine brilliant, vibrant, and appealingly fresh.
A splendid aperitif and a delightful complement to antipasto, pasta, and light meals.

La Crema Monterey Chardonnay 2016
On the nose, the 2016 La Crema Monterey Chardonnay shows Meyer lemon, passionfruit, grilled pineapple and pie crust. On the palate, nectarine, papaya and crisp lemon-tangerine notes are complemented by a touch of spice, complex minerality. Balanced acidity lingers on a long finish.
quickly-seared flounder accented with a toss of al dente bean sprouts, Dungeness crab or pan-sautéed petrale sole, Manchego Cheese.

François Millet Rosé 2016 Sancerre, Loire, France
The Millet family’s history in Sancerre dates back to the 1930s. This Pinot Noir-based wine, the most serious of the rosés that the family produces, is a ripe strawberry-flavored wine with a tangy, bitter-cherry edge.
Produced in tiny quantities, François rosé Sancerre offers a shiny, salmon pink colour and aromas of wild strawberries and spring blossom. The texture on the palate is very moreish, with an almost strawberries-and-cream quality. Fruit flavours are very much to the fore here with a luscious finish.
paëlla, minestrone, bouillabaisse, summer salads, barbecue

Alias Pinot Noir 2015 California
100% Pinot Noir
Dusty ruby color. Mild aromas of cherry, roasted pepper, and putty with a silky, bright, dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body and a brisk blood orange and whole nuts finish with papery tannins and light oak. A carefree table wine.
A rather impressive wine for the price. Sourcing from mostly the Mendecino region as well as Sonoma. This wine offers ripe and pretty pinot fruit with great balance and freshness.
This is a perfect wine to enjoy on its own, and can also pair with any chicken or pork dish, and just about anything else.

Montana Crianza 2015 Rioja,Spain
97% Tempranillo and 3% Graciano
Spice and leather complement the deep blackberry fruit and ferrous minerality of Rioja’s red soils. Mouth-filling yet fresh, with the structure for improving in the bottle for a number of years.
Roasted chicken breast stuffed with peppers, caramelized onions, and goat cheese. Herb encrusted New York Strip Steak, Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Fattoria di Lucignano Colli Fiorentini Chianti 2015 Tuscany, Italy
Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino & Merlot
Medium intensity ruby red. The nose on this wine is intense, overflowing with fruity aromas of black cherry and violets. Soft and medium bodied on the palate it balances rather present tannins with moderate acidity. An ideal accompaniment to pasta dishes, medium aged cheese.

Michel Lynch Sauvignon Blanc 2016 Bordeaux, France:
Brilliant pale colour with silver glints, nose that is bursting with notes of tropical fruits, pineapple, and hints of coconut. The palate is generous and lively, revealing aromas of acacia and white peach. The finish, persistent, displays lovely aromatic complexity, a touch of minerality and a crisp freshness.
blue crab cakes, grilled cod fish and potatoes with rosemary and olive oil

Huguet Can Feixes Blanc Seleccio 2016 Penedes, Spain:
Macabeo, Chardonnay, and a touch of Malvasia de Sitges. Parellada at its best, from high-altitude, gravelly mountain soils: intense lemon-oil aroma with firm acid structure enhanced by the rare, glyceric Malvasía. Stony and aromatic, reminiscent of France’s Chablis or Rheingau. Apple, melon and apricot aromas, Flavors of melon, lime and wet stones reflect gravelly soils, and it’s steady on a long finish.
Seafood Paella, Shrimp and Spicy Sausage Salad

Banyan Gewürztraminer 2016 Arroyo Seco, Monterey, California:
Refreshing and bright with floral aromatics. This off dry Gewürztraminer is grown at Mission Ranch and Ventana Vineyards in the Arroyo Seco AVA of Monterey. Typical for that area, wind, fog, and cool temperatures predominate year round. The vineyard is carefully farmed to assure the specific ripeness, a balance of sugar and acidity, that we are looking for. A long growing season and temperatures that rarely rise above 80°F create an ideal spot for such an intensely aromatic wine.
Pad Thai, Green Curry Chicken

Franklin Tate Estates Wines Shiraz 2015 Margaret River, Australia:
Deep ruby red with a purple hue. A rich and spicy nose with dense dark cherry, blueberry and mixed red berry fruits. These are complimented by notes of Belgian waffle, milk chocolate and vanilla aged in American oak. This is a highly expressive wine with great fruit concentration driven by mixed berries and dark, juicy cherry fruit. The tannin structure is chewy, and the oak has provided a sweet, chocolatey flavour along with hints of hazelnuts and toast. White pepper lingers on the finish.
Grilled beef served rare with a green pepper sauce.

Domaine Les Pins Les Rochettes Red 2015 Bourgueil, Loire, France:
Cabernet Franc 100% Domaine les Pins has been a family-owned estate for 5 generations. They are independent winegrowers who work with traditional methods at every stage of the production. Ruby red with hints of violet. Floral with red berry fruits on the nose. Flavors of cherry, blackberry and raspberry. Long finish with round tannins. Roast Lamb or Pork, Neapolitan Style Pizza, Duck and Mushroom based dishes
91pts Wine Enthusiast – 2015 vintage – Editor’s choice

Armida Poizin Zinfandel 2014 California:
A moderate, shiny, ruby red that glistens toward cranberry. The nose is Boysenberry, blackberries, and cranberries all come forward, and are wrapped up in a spice mix. Touches of vanilla come in, as does hints of espresso, oak, and dark chocolate. The mouthfeel is soft with a hint of milk chocolate, sweet oak, and a long vanilla finish. The body is soft, and smooth, like a velvet glove. Amazing given how it pricks with the heat of the high alcohol hidden behind the veneer. Huge flavor of blackberry, cranberry, and vanilla come through. Compliments of spices, raspberries, and dried cherries add complexity.  Barbecued Ribs, Rich Spicy Chili, Eggplant Caponata

Halter Ranch, Grenache Blanc, 2016 Paso Robles, California $24.99
A primary blending grape in the southern part of France, Grenache Blanc is the light skinned mutation of Grenache Noir, the one used to make all the yummy reds. Here it’s 75% blended with 21% Picpoul Blanc, and 4% Viognier. (two of our favorite white grapes as many of you know) This is truly delicious and unique. There’s almost a sweet-tart dust quality to this wine, without being sweet, of course. Orange peel, banana, even custard, all while being clean, crisp, very dry and acidic without being overly citrusy. The finish is long and keeps evolving. Just keeps getting better and better, yum!

This will go with salad in a way many wines can’t, because of its great acidity. Fruit with goat cheese. All manner of seafood, or just drink it by itself, wowzers, it’s yummyliscious!

This wine is S.I.P. (Sustainability In Practice) Certified, which is a certification specifically for the wine industry, and is a step beyond USDA Organic.

Plouzeau, Chinon, Les Cornuelles 2014, Loire France
Chinon is a part of the Loire valley known for great Cabernet Franc
Leather, dark, dark, dark chocolate, almost a hint of spicy Italian sausage with a little chalk, or slate. (if you’ve been to a rock yard or used some in your own yard, you’ll know what I mean) The palate has these flavors but with the addition of some roast tomato or red pepper. The Tannins are pretty chewy (I love chewy tannins! I you don’t stick this one under the stairs for a couple of years) and the acidity is med high. The wine is very balanced and will age well. (I’m planning to purchase a few extra to lay down for a bit) You’re going to love this with a meaty pizza, sausage or game on the grill, creamy rich mushrooms with pasta, or grilled bacon wrapped mushrooms.

This wine is made from estate fruit and is certified organic. Pierre Plouzeau bought the property in 1976, renovated the castle and replanted the vineyards. His son Marc took over the vineyard in 1999 and converted the production to organic.
