Wine World Wines, Third Thursday, December 20th:

Le Grand St Vincent Sauvignon 2017 Touraine, France
This pale yellow wine streaked with green is dry and refreshing with straightforward but typical aromas; the mouth is full and develops into fleshiness with the characteristic fruitiness of our Côteaux wines. It goes perfectly with seafood, raw vegetables, charcuterie, fish and barbecues.

Brack Mountain “Cyprus” Rose of Pinot Noir 2017 Anderson Valley, California
This gorgeous rosé explodes right out of the bottle with notes of cherry blossom, honeysuckle, and hyacinth. On the palate, it has notes of ripe Rainier cherries, watermelon, and peach with a nice, dry finish. Made with all Anderson Valley fruit!

M. Bonnamy Crémant de Loire Brut, NV, Loire France
65% Chenin Blanc, 20% Chardonnay, 15% Cabernet Franc. Quartzy and bright nose, redolent with fresh apple skin and crushed sweetart aromas. Zippy and energetic on the palate with a long chalky citrus finish, the maritime proximity and limestone soils really shine through in the very pure, minerally wine. A fantastic accompaniment for an aperitif or seafood.

M. Chapoutier Belleruche Côtes-du-Rhône 2017 Rhone Valley, France
Aromas of blackcurrant, raspberry, and white pepper. Juicy, powerful and red fruit on the palate, with lovely roasted notes, and delicate silky tannins. Young milk-fed lamb.

Alfredo Bertolani ‘Rosso all’Antica’ Lambrusco 2016 Reggiano, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
A dry sparkling red, this wine is created fully respecting the ancient traditions, selected from the best ruby coloured Lambrusco grapes. With a full ruby red colour, Rosso all’Antica blends its important body with the classic liveliness of Lambrusco. Ideally serve with typical Emilia cuisine, cured meats, roasts and game. Its full body and balance can also hold their own when combined with more challenging dishes like brazed and grilled meats.

Broadside Printer’s Alley Proprietary Red 2014 California
35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 60% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot from selected vineyards in Paso Robles, Santa Margarita Ranch, and San Juan Creek District AVAs
Enticing berry, plum and vanilla notes dominate the generous aromatics. Endowed with youthful vibrancy, its juicy, bright palate opens up to reveal layers of baking spice and cherry.

WINE CLUB Selections December 2018

Enrico Serafino Gavi del Comune di Gavi 2017 Gavi, Piemonte, Italy
100% Cortese, which is also called Gavi, the name of the town it is associated with. If the grapes are grown within the town limits, it can be called Gavi di Gavi. This wine has a soft lush natural fruit up front, and a dry crisp slighlty minerally finish. Clean and delicious! Here’s a blurb about the Winery:
“Enrico Serafino was founded in 1878 in Canale d’Alba, one of the main towns in the Roero region of Piemonte, Italy, which has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages as a farming center for the area. Today the winery still stands in its original location, making it the oldest winery in the region.”
This will be super as an Apertif or with cold starters, almost any sort of lightly seasoned seafood, or even a fruit salad.

Requiem Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 Columbia Valley, Washington
This is a big ‘ol inky cab from Washington, sourced from four vineyards in the Columbia Valley AVA (more info on each vineyard here: https://www.requiemwines.com/) Don’t be afraid to decant this for an hour or so. It’s a monster, big, bold fruity, but not sweet, and with a nice bit of acidity and lush tannins on the long finish. Hints of chocolate, anise, and lavender give it a nice complexity that surrounds the big fruity opening!
This will be nice with big meaty dishes, I suggest grilled with a serious red wine based marinade. I often like to add a touch of honey to mine, the sweetness burns off and allows the meat to char more easily without getting dry. Often we put a little chili garlic sauce to add a little spice, maybe some anise seed or a touch of chopped vanilla bean…

Ruby red in color with purple reflections. A fine, fruity nose that’s slighty spicy, with notes of ripe plum and bitter almond. Supple and fresh on the palette with good structure. Well balanced with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

Bodegas Olivares Tinto 2016 Jumilla DOP, Spain
75% Monastrell, 15% Grenache, 10% Syrah. Dark berries and cherry notes. Fresh in the mouth, we again perceive a sweet, vibrant dark fruit, with touches of pepper accompanied by good acidity. Ideal for accompanying a wide variety of dishes, from flavorful, meaty-textured fish to pasta, meat and aged cheese.

Alta Vista Classic Cabernet Sauvignon RSV 2016 Mendoza, Argentina
Displays layered aromas of ripe, red fruits with black pepper and toasted oak notes before juicy red berry flavors on the palate; medium-bodied and balanced. The wine has smooth tannins and a touch of oak on the long finish. This wine has a charming character that is perfect for accompanying barbecues, pasta with intense sauces or hard and semi-hard cheese.

WINE CLUB Selections November 2018

R. Stuart & Co. Love Oregon White Sky White 2014 Oregon

Located in Willamette Valley Oregon, R. Stuart and Co. focus on making low production, high quality wines at reasonable prices. (only about 16,000 case total per year.) They are a Negociant style winery, meaning they don’t own vineyards but source their grapes from growers mostly throughout the Willamette Valley. They’ve been working in the wine business in Oregon for decades, and they know where the good fruit is!

We had this last night with Asian-ish chicken with black bean sauce and rice, and a Indian style cucumber salad. It was delicious! A kitchen-sink white blend, that’s primarily Pinot Gris, but drinks a bit like a Rhone Blend. Full flavored, round, inviting, but not sweet, YUM!

91pts Wine Enthusiast
Editors’ Choice
“This is principally Pinot Gris, blended with 7% Viognier and 12% other white grapes. Those other grapes are quite aromatic and send up pretty floral aromas immediately. When tasted this also offers a compelling streak of honey, with fruit flavors suggesting orange marmalade. It’s not sweet, just fruity, round and quite delicious.”

Michele Chiarlo Il Principe Nebbiolo 2014 Piedmont, Italy
100% Nebbiolo, the grape that both Barbaresco and Barolo are made from, can, intriguingly, seem both light and full bodied at the same time. You can see your fingers through it like a classic Pinot Noir, but it delivers powerful, yet clean, flavors. This is the kind of wine that will enhance your meal, but not dominate. A perfect choice for thanksgiving fare, it’ll go as well with turkey as it does with Ham or Roasted Beef. It’s hard to find an example of this grape at this price point, ($20) and the quality of this wine is outstanding. Michele Chiarlo has been producing wine in Italy since 1956 and is known for making great wines that speak of the terrior where they are produced.

From the winery: “Garnet red of medium intensity with brilliant reflections. Intense of good complexity and great elegance, hints of small black fruits, plums and violet. Pleasant impact, ample and balanced with silky tannins; highly pleasing and long lasting. It is well balanced at 2 years old and has a life span that can easily arrive at 8-10 years.”

“100% Nebbiolo from vineyards of Barbaresco and Vezza d’Alba in the hillsides of Roero area. The soil is made up of bluish-grey, sand-rich, clayey calcareous marl; it is a soil poor in organic substances but with a considerable percentage of manganese and potassium. Highly evident is its typicality, characterized by varietal flavours and by the influence of the Roero terroir. Il Principe is a Nebbiolo that has been left to refine in large vats for a year; its organoleptic characteristics are extraordinarily classical. It is a noble wine of excellent character and pleasantness, suited to medium ageing.”

90pts James Suckling
A red with nice chocolate and berry character, yet light, fruity and vivd.

Torrontes is the signature white wine of Argentina, dating from early vineyards first planted in the 1800s. This popular expression of Argentina is growing in acclaim around the world, popular for a light, refreshing wine with Muscat notes redolent of jasmine and orange blossoms. Excellent as an aperitif, it also finds a welcome place with delicate first courses.

Domaine Delalex Marin Clos de Pont 2014
100% Chasselas, Single Vineyard
Savoie is in the foothills of the Alps south of Lake Geneva near the border with Switzerland. Marin is a sub-appelation of the Savoie region. The Chasselas grape is thought to originate there. Chasselas produces a dry clean, acidic wine. These wines are known for there age-ability and this wine in particular is held at least a year before it’s released. I found a few quotes from Chasselas producers “It’s not easy to make a very light wine, but it is a wine that has something to say”, “unique freshness and elegance, and it is very delicate. It doesn’t make you tired when you drink it”, “expresses the minerality of the soils where it comes from, and the microclimate”. Look for deep but subtle complexity in this wine. It will be great with light to medium cheeses, almost any fresh lightly seasoned seafood, and perfect with or as a base for Fondue, Enjoy!

Descendientes de Jose Palacios “Petalos” 2015 Bierzo, Spain
This wine is made mostly from a grape called Mencia, which we believe originates in Portugal. Bierzo is in the upper left of Spain just above Portugal, it may be indigenous to the region. read the “Wine Advocate” review below for more info on the blend:
92 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The entry level 2015 Pétalos del Bierzo, their regional wine, in the new official category that will start working in the appellation from the 2017 vintage, a blend of many different vineyards planted with field blends, where the breakdown might come to some 5% white varieties (Valenciana/Doña Blanca, Godello and Palomino/Jerez) and around 1% other reds (Pan y Carne, Negrada and Gran Negro), all from vines ranging between 40 and 90 years of age on slopes (half of the grapes around the village of Corullón and the remainder in the rest of Bierzo). It’s a showy, approachable, aromatic and open version of Pétalos, and as I tasted it later on in the season, it felt more polished and round, with a lush texture. It’s extremely aromatic, in a way similar to the 2012. This is always one of the best values not only of Bierzo but for the whole of Spain. (LG) 92+”
So yes, a field blend of mostly Mencia and a few other grapes, all old vines, but more importantly, what’s in the glass is absolutely delicious!, A little hint of lavender and cocao in the nose, with a palette of big, lush, velvety, dark fruit leading to a little “cigarbox” and substantial but not overpowering tannins. This wine will age well! We enjoyed it with grilled steak and it shone brightly! Yum!
