Wines for Friday, January 8, 2009

Vi D'Aguilla 2008 aVinYó. Penédes, Spain
A crisp, dry, effervescent white made from Petit gran Muscat grapes. Green apple and
lemon-lime and aromas are complemented by white flowers and minerality. Light body,
with a clean, fresh finish. Good food companion Fun and easy to drink. Lively aperitif.

Domaine de Pajot 2008, White Blend.  Côtes de Gascogne, France
A blend of Ugni Blanc and Colombard with flowery aromas along with pear, citrus, and
pineapple notes. These flavors are framed with an appealing mineral aspect.
Silky texture with good acidty. Pair with sautéed shellfish. Chicken. Mild cheeses.

January White Wine of the Month
Oppenheimer Krotenbrunnen Spätlese 2008, St Christina.  Rheinhessen, Germany
A late-harvest Riesling of exceptionally good quality for a bargain price. Amazing.  Enticing
floral aromas lead to rich, ripe fruit flavors. Its late-harvest light sweetness is well-balanced
by a pleasant, refreshing acidity. A fine match for a wide variety of dishes: Asian foods, spicy
lighter dishes, shrimp and whole-wheat pasta, salads with a fruit element.  Excellent aperitif.

January  Red Wine of the Month
Pinot Noir Reserva 2009, Apaltagua.  Curico, Chile
A brilliant ruby color, this captivating Pinot Noir emphasizes aromas of cherries, raspberries,
and soft notes of oak. The fruit flavors are melded with smooth and elegant tannins with an
appealing  finish. The grapes come from Apaltagua’s own vineyard in Tricao in the Curico
Valley.  Roast pork tenderloin, shallot-blackberry marinade/glaze.
Salmon with herb-roasted potatoes.

Kermit Lynch Cuvee Rouge 2008, Vin de Pays du Vaucluse. Rhône Valley, France
A lovely southern French (Rhône) wine and a remarkable value. Lively black raspberry
aromas with
hints of rosemary and lavendar. Lots of clean fruit flavor (without oak )
with a nice light-tannin structure, and a touch of minerality and black pepper spice.

A terrific every day red “old world” style, yet showing good up-front fruit.
Grilled or seared rib steak with
rosemary & thyme and roast potatoes.
Ratatouille. Spicy sausages. Robust cheeses. Goot Essa Der Alpen Kase.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, Peirano Estate. Lodi, California
One of our most popular California Cabs.  Full aromas of dark fruit with hints of chocolate,
dark-roasted coffee bean, sage and spice.  Rich flavors of blackberry, dark currant, ripe
black cherries and notes of sweet oak and  white pepper. Full body and texture.  Supple
tannins and good acidity add stucture and balance its rich fruit. Ready to drink now, yet
will mature gracefully for 6 to 8 years. Hearty beef stews.  Steak with blue cheese topping.
Robust cheeses.

Cheers,   Wine World

Among changes to Georgia Avenue made for the new North Augusta Municipal Building are the addition of a traffic light at Center Street  (intersecting into Ga. Ave where Bluff Ave had intersected), AND the

entrance to the parking lot
for Wine World and The Highlander.

Coming from Georgia, enter from  Georgia Ave  immediately after the bridge (much closer to the bridge than previously).
The entrance begins just at the lamp post.
Coming from SC, you can use the space near the new entrance (the left-turn lane for Center St for oncoming traffic) where you can wait if traffic is coming across the bridge from Georgia.

Watch out for the changes made in the curbing.
